Baby acne is quite a common occurrence. When your precious baby is around four weeks old, their beautiful face may – to your dismay – break out with red bumps. This usually comes as a complete surprise. It can also be confusing because they may seem to come and go at different times – they may be more visible more when your baby is overheated, fussy or upset, and be practically unnoticeable at other times. Acne can also appear worse if baby’s skin comes into contact with cloth washed in harsh detergents, or becomes wet from saliva or milk.

You may be concerned about how these pimples look and about their significance. Although the appearance of baby acne may be troubling to you, it is a very common condition that is completely harmless and usually takes disappears without a trace within a few weeks or months.

Doctors agree that baby acne is a direct result of the mother’s hormone levels when she is giving birth. In other words, they are a fleeting reminder of your past bodily connection between yourself and your baby. Just before birth, mother’s hormones cross the placenta and enter the baby’s bloodstream. What you may not know, this stimulated vital, last-minute physical development of the baby’s vital organs, such as increasing the size of the lungs in order to prepare them for breathing air. It just so happens that the same hormones also stimulate oil production in the baby’s skin, in many cases causing the pimples to appear on your son’s or daughter’s face.

Fleshy or red pimples can be present at birth, but typically appear at 3 to 4 weeks of age. They occur predominately on the cheeks, but are also quite common on the forehead and chin. Whiteheads are sometimes present. This condition tends to come and go until the baby is between 4 and 6 months old.

It’s best to let the acne run its course. You may gently cleanse your baby’s face once a day with water, and perhaps a mild baby soap. Do not use lotions or oils, as they can make the condition worse. The oil glands will disappear, and you won’t see the acne again until you precious baby becomes a teenager. This time, however, their own hormones will be responsible for the acne onset.

If baby acne does become severe or it lasts for more than six months, you may consult a pediatrician. The pediatrician will assess the severity of your baby’s acne and offer a gentle medication to assist with healing or they will recommend that you allow it to run its course.

—Don’t you just HATE that..!

I know I do. It may be just a coincidence, it may be Murphy’s Law, it may be stress associated with the event – it does not matter. What matters is getting rid of it or making it invisible PRESTO!

So what are some steps that one can take for getting rid of pimples fast? There are many home remedies and cures that you can try if you need fast results. I have not tested all of them, as I am a proponent of natural acne treatment that take care of the reasons we get acne in the first place, but for short-term solutions, these may work for you:

** Use cold treatment to reduce swelling and redness of the affected area. Take an ice cube and rub it against the spot for two minutes every 30 minutes. This will also help decrease any inflammation and pain.

** One of the simplest ways to make acne disappear overnight is by using toothpaste or baking soda for acne pimples removal. First you’ll have remove any makeup that you may be wearing and then apply white toothpaste on the affected area. You may feel burning sensation for the first few minutes and if the irritation persists then rinse it off. Putting toothpaste on your zit will dry out the zit and help to bring matters to a head, thereby speeding up the cycle of zit growth.

** Wash your skin delicately twice a day with mild soap or cleanser and apply a little bit cream or ointment with benzoyl peroxide (not recommended if you have very delicate skin). Do not scrub too hard. Scrubbing your skin vigorously can, irritate your skin and make things even worse!

** Cucumbers have been known for being good for your skin. Peel the cucumber and cut it in thin slices or make a paste. Put it on your face and let it sit for at least 20 minutes. This should be enough time to soak into your skin pores.

** Make a paste of mint leaves and milk and apply on the acne. Leave it for 15 to 20 minutes and then wash it. Mint leaves contain ingredients that kill bacteria and have been used in acne remedies for ages.

** Apply a paste of fresh garlic on the affected areas overnight. Make a fine paste of garlic cloves and just leave it for a few hours or over night.

** Use makeup to conceal the pimple. Just be sure to use oil-free makeup products, and to remove it before going to bed.

** Stop touching your face! It is surprising how many times a day we touch our faces with our not-so-clean hands without even thinking about it. Touching your face with your hands can spread bacteria which can lead to inflammation.

Some of these may not be a gentle or natural solutions, but for many people they work really well and fairly quickly.

Now, if you absolutely must squeeze a pimple, I suggest that you at least use these tips to decrease the risk of scarring.

How to Squeeze a Pimple?

How to get rid of pimples overnight?

** Gently cleanse the area with alcohol and use a washcloth to apply moist heat with gentle pressure for a few minutes. Warm compress will reduce the force needed to express the pus when squeezing pimples. Or boil some hot water and place your face over steam.

** Take a fine needle, sterilize it with alcohol, and use it to puncture the skin over the white head.
Take a piece of gauze pad or facial tissue and GENTLY apply pressure to either side of the lesion with your index fingers to push the puss out.

** Once the pus or blackhead has been expressed, stop squeezing right away! Any additional squeezing or manipulation will lead to more inflammation and possible entering of bacteria into the skin, both of which will increase the likelihood of scarring.

** Wipe off the pus with clean cotton balls or tissue paper.

It is important to use the method correctly and apply the pressure GENTLY around the affected area.

There are some cosmetic tools that can be purchased to help you do that, which is much better than using your fingers. Comedo extractors are special cosmetic instruments that allow you to extract a comedo from its follicle by applying even pressure around its circumference. They are widely available and easy to use.

Pore strips can also be used. These are pieces of cloth soaked with a glue-like substance. You stick it and press it to the affected area. When you pull the strip off, it should pull the plugs in the pores out.

The common method of pinching the skin together hard can actually push the pus further back in, leading to inflammation and the possibility of making the pore larger. In some case a lump can form on the skin, which can only be removed by a clinician using a special tool to create a larger hole to release the built up pus.

–WARNING! — Do not EVER try to squeeze, pop, or otherwise manipulate an inflamed pimple that is just a red, headless bump, deep under your skin! There is no way you can squeeze it out, instead you will most likely make the inflammation worse, longer lasting, and much more likely to leave a permanent scar. Then your only option may be acne scar laser treatment, which is a costly and painful procedure.

When bumps turns into a pimple with a yellow or whitish head, or a blackhead, it’s best to just keep applying the ice and the spot treatment and wait for the pimple to resolve on its own. Eventually it will open up, drain and heal.

Removing pimples is tricky and likely to lead to new inflammation and eventually scarring. Most dermatologists advise patients not to try this at home, but to turn to a trained specialist. And this is good advice.
